Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! The KEIA family recently visited the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of The Big Island, and let me tell you, it was an experience that will stay etched in our memories forever. Our home for the week was the stunning Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, a haven of relaxation and the perfect launching pad for our explorations.
From the moment we arrived at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, we were enveloped in the spirit of aloha. The pristine golden sands of Hapuna Beach beckoned, and the turquoise waters whispered promises of adventure. The entire resort felt magical.
But the Big Island is so much more than just beautiful beaches and incredible Reosrts. We were eager to explore its diverse terrain, so a visit to the island’s incredible National Parks was a must. Our exploration of the Big Island’s historical and cultural significance led us to the Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site. Standing on this sacred ground was a truly profound experience. Pu’ukohola Heiau, meaning “Temple on the Hill of the Whale,” is not just a collection of ancient stones; it’s a powerful testament to Hawaiian history and the vision of King Kamehameha the Great. I highly recommend visiting this location and taking it its peaceful atmosphere.
The next morning we were able to visit two farmers markets on the island and experience freshly picked and cut coconut water and tasted some of the best food I have ever eaten. We then spent a delightful afternoon exploring downtown Kona. This lively coastal town offered a charming mix of shops, restaurants, and historical sites. We strolled along Ali’i Drive, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and enjoying the ocean views. It was a great place to pick up some souvenirs and grab a bite to eat while experiencing the more bustling side of the island.
For some more underwater adventures, we headed to Kahalu’u Beach Park, just south of Kona. This protected bay is renowned for its calm, shallow waters and abundant marine life, making it an ideal spot for family snorkeling. We were amazed by the colorful array of fish swimming around the coral reef, a truly accessible and beautiful snorkeling experience for all ages and skill levels. It was a fantastic way to spend a relaxing morning immersed in the underwater beauty of the Big Island. We also learned that the bay faces significant pressure due to its popularity, and there are ongoing initiatives to educate visitors on “reef etiquette.” Volunteers from the Kahalu’u Bay Education Center are often present, offering guidance on how to snorkel responsibly – avoiding touching or stepping on the coral, and reminding everyone to use reef-safe sunscreen. It was heartening to see the community actively involved in preserving this natural treasure.
During our stay we discovered that the Kīlauea volcano was active and was only a short two hour drive to see it in person! Before we set our sights on the fiery spectacle of the active volcano, we made a couple of essential stops along the way, both offering unique tastes and sights of the Big Island. First up was the world-famous Punalu’u Bakery. Let me tell you, the reputation is well-deserved! The sweet aroma wafting from the bakery was intoxicating, and we couldn’t resist indulging in some of their local specialties. The sweet bread was unbelievably soft and flavorful, and the malasadas (Portuguese donuts) tasted like sweet bites of heaven. It was the perfect fuel for our upcoming adventures!
With our bellies happy, we spent some time at the adjacent Punalu’u Black Sand Beach Park. This wasn’t just another beach; the stark contrast of the jet-black sand against the turquoise ocean was mesmerizing. We watched in awe as green sea turtles, or “honu,” gracefully basked in the sun along the shoreline. The kids played in tide pools along the beach and soaked in the incredible Hawaiian sun.
Our anticipation built as we made our way to the Volcanoes National Park, our ultimate destination to witness the raw power of Kīlauea volcano. While we had visions of fiery rivers of lava, the reality of our visit was different, yet no less incredible. The active lava flows weren’t readily visible at the surface in the way some might expect. However, this didn’t diminish the awe we felt. Standing at the edge of the lookout, the sheer scale of the volcanic landscape was breathtaking. The dramatic formations, the stark contrast of solidified lava against the lush vegetation reclaiming parts of the land, painted a powerful picture of creation and destruction. It was a tangible lesson in geology and the immense power of our planet.
It’s important to note, however, that the volcanic fumes and gases present in the area can be irritating to the respiratory system. While the air might seem clear, individuals with asthma, allergies, or other breathing issues should exercise caution and be aware of potential sensitivities. We noticed a slight difference in the air quality and made sure to take it easy and stay hydrated. If you have any respiratory concerns, it’s definitely wise to check the current conditions and consult with park rangers for guidance before venturing into the more active areas.
Even without visible flowing lava, experiencing the Kīlauea volcano was a profound and unforgettable highlight of our Big Island adventure. It offered a unique perspective on the island’s formation and the incredible forces at play beneath its surface.
To immerse ourselves in the rich culture of the islands, we also attended an authentic Luau at the Mauna Kea Resort. The vibrant music, captivating dances, and delicious traditional Hawaiian food were a feast for all our senses. It was a wonderful way to learn about the history and traditions of this special place and to feel the true warmth of the aloha spirit.
Our time on the Big Island was a tapestry woven with incredible experiences. From the luxurious comfort of the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort to the raw power of the active volcano, the vibrant underwater world, and the rich cultural traditions, every moment was a gift. It was a reminder of the incredible beauty and diversity our planet holds and the joy of experiencing it together as a family.
If you’re planning a trip to the Big Island, be sure to carve out time for snorkeling, exploring the National Parks, and experiencing a traditional Luau. And don’t forget to witness the unique beauty of a black sand beach and, if possible, the awe-inspiring power of an active volcano. The Big Island truly has something for everyone, and it’s an adventure your family will cherish for years to come.
